MOUCHEZ (Rear Admiral A.). La Photographie astronomique. P., Gauthier-Villars, 1887, in-12, 107 p., modern binding, red half cloth with corners, ms. title-piece glued to the spine (1st booklet detached). First edition including 7 plates, 3 of them in heliogravure (1 folding), and 4 original photographs pasted under captioned serpents. The photos of the Henry brothers show the Moon, the Hercules cluster, Jupiter and Saturn. Images never seen before in such detail. Ernest Mouchez (Madrid, 1821 - Wissous, 1892), was a French astronomer, hydrographer and rear admiral, member of the Academy of Sciences and director of the Paris Observatory. Mouchez and the Henry brothers undertook a photographic survey of the sky. The goal was to draw up a map. They had a photographic equatorial telescope built at great expense (see figure p. 29). The publication of this book allowed them to present their project with some illustrations, some of which are the first photographic representations of certain parts of the sky. Nice copy.
