GAUDIBERT (C.-M.). General map of the Moon... - Lot 77 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
GAUDIBERT (C.-M.). General map of the Moon drawn under the direction of Camille Flammarion. Drawn with the greatest care by Léon Fenet. P., E. Bertaux (Impr. Monrocq), [1887], 1 folded plate of 116 x 86 cm, mounted on canvas (wetness on the lower left corner, stains and pitting on the back of the canvas). Published in 1887 at a time of rapid and impressive progress in science and technology, the "General Map of the Moon" was conceived under the supervision of the great astronomer Camille Flammarion and produced by six hands: the draftsman Léon Fenet, the astronomer Casimir Marie Gaudibert, and the map publisher Émile Bertaux. It represents the lunar star and its particular relief as they were known by astronomers at the end of the 19th century. The Moon is drawn from the north downwards, in accordance with the orientation observed with a telescope. Divided into four quarters, the drawing of Léon Fenet underlines with details the main lunar sites, from the Seas of Serenity and Rain to the immense circus of Copernicus, without forgetting the remarkable steep mountains of the Riphees Mountains. Extremely rare.
