ROTTIERS [colonel Bernard Eugène Antoine].... - Lot 65 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
ROTTIERS [colonel Bernard Eugène Antoine]. Monumens de Rhodes. Dedicated to His Majesty the King. Brux, chez Mme Vve Colinez, 1828, 4° oblong, 1 p. of title, 1 p. of table of contents, 75 plates numbered in Roman numerals (plates 27 and 28 inverted), black half-basin with corners (worn and damaged binding, int. hinge split, marginal tears, margins showing freckles and spotting, plate 44 replaced by a loose lithograph). First edition comprising 75 lithographs on Chine appliqué by H. Delpierre after drawings by P.J. Witdoeck, 8 of which are enhanced with watercolors. This admirable work offers a map of the island of Rhodes, views of the port, fortifications, buildings, some of which are in ruins, details of frescoes in color, etc. Colonel Rottiers (1771-1857) carried out several archaeological missions in Greece, in close collaboration with the Dutch government. The antiquities brought back enriched the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. Very fresh lithographs.
