FLAUBERT (Gustave).
La Tentation de Saint Antoine. P., Charpentier, 1874, large 8°, modern binding, light brown half-basin with bands, smooth titled spine (russeting at the head of the volume and on a few pages). Enriched with a portrait of Flaubert placed opposite the false title. First edition containing the 2 mistakes: "capitaine" instead of "capitale" (p. 152) and "éphémérides" instead of "éphémère" (p. 295). Current edition after 75 Hollande and 12 Chine. A first version, the most extensive, had been read to Maxime Du Camp and Louis Bouilhet before the departure for the Orient in 1849. A second version, "pruned", should have appeared in 1856, but Flaubert was afraid after the scandal of Madame Bovary. It is only in 1874 that he had the final version published, clearly modified compared to the first one since it includes entirely new parts. In the midst of my sorrows," he wrote in 1872, "I am completing my Saint Anthony, it is the work of my whole life, since the first idea came to me in 1845, in Genoa, in front of a painting by Breughel, and since that time, I have not ceased to think about it and to do related readings.
