Emblemata - VAENIUS (Otho). Amorum emblemata, figuris aeneis incisa studio othonis vaeni batavo-lugdunensis. emblemes of love, with verses in latin, english, and italian. Antwerp, by the author ("venalia apud auctorem") (at the end: "Typis Henrici Swingenij", 1608 (M.DC.IIX.), 8° oblong (14 x 18,5 cm), (16, including title and 1 figure)-747 (sic, read 247)-1 blank p., 124 emblems in a medallion (the one on p. 75 in color), text in Latin, English and Italian, later binding in full brown calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, red morocco title-piece (worm work in the inner white margin of qs ff: 187/188 ff, without consequence: tear with lack of paper in the outer white margin of the last f., without consequence, traces of use, 1st and last p. lightly soiled). A good copy. First edition, decorated with a frontispiece and 124 emblems engraved by Cornelis Boël after Otto van Veen, known as Vænius. There are several editions of the text, this one contains the mottos in Latin and the quatrains in English and Italian. Good copy. Very rare first edition of a beautiful major collection of love emblems by the Antwerp artist and teacher of P.P. Rubens, Otto Vaenius (1556-1629), intended for the cultured elite of the Low Countries. Otto van Veen or Vaenius was one of the foremost painters and best engravers of his time.
