HOOGHE (Romain de). The Hundred New Stories... - Lot 14 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
HOOGHE (Romain de). The Hundred New Stories follow the Hundred New Stories containing The Hundred New Stories, which are very pleasant to tell, in all good Companies; by way of joyfulness. With excellent figures in intaglio, engraved on the designs of the famous Mr. Romain de Hooge. Cologne, Pierre Gaillard, 1701, 2 vols. 8°, front, [30]-397-[3 bl.], [24]-389-[3 bl.] p., full red morocco, boards framed with a triple gilt fillet, small gilt stag's head stamped in the center of the boards, spines fully decorated, small gilt inner lace, gilt fillets on the edges, edges gilt. Superb binding signed Lortic (an inconsequential blow to the back cover of the second volume). First edition of the illustrations by Romeyn de Hooghe for these gallant tales attributed to Louis XI or Antoine de La Salle: 1 allegorical frontispiece engraved by G. van Gouwen, 1 vignette, 1 cul-de-lampe and 100 mid-page engravings placed at the head of each short story, several of which engraved by L. Scherm or Jan van Vianen. There are 2 editions of this book under the same date: one with the mid-page figures, the other one with the separate figures. Despite the uncertainty about the priority of these editions, the one with the mid-page proofs, as in our copy, is generally considered of better quality. (Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe, n° 94; Cohen, 658-659.). A superb copy.
