[HOLBACH, baron d?] Common Sense drawn from... - Lot 13 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[HOLBACH, baron d?] Common Sense drawn from nature. Followed by the Testament of the priest [Jean] MESLIER. Paris, Chez Bouqueton, An 1er, [1792], 2 vols. in-16, [4]-264 p.; [4]-296 p., full brown calf of the period, boards framed with a triple gilt fillet, decorated smooth spines, title and greefs (headpieces and corners worn, lack of the upper cuff of the 2nd volume). First simultaneous edition of the " Bon sens ", attributed to Baron d'Holbach by Barbier, and of the " Testament " of Jean Meslier, published by Voltaire in 1761. If in the present edition the first text is not frankly attributed to Meslier (as in the previous year and the same year), the later editions of the two texts together present them, wrongly, as the work of the only priest Meslier. Contains in vol. 2, pp. 165-170 an "Abrégé de la vie du sieur Meslier" introducing the "Testament" and its preliminaries (notice to the reader and foreword), pp. 171-296. (J. Vercruysse, Bibliographie descriptive des écrits du baron d'Holbach, 1971, 1792 A 2.) Rare, only one copy found in France (Paris, Sorbonne).
