DESMARETS de SAINT-SORLIN (Jean). The delights of the mind. Dialogues dedicated to the beautiful minds of the world. Paris, Florentin Lambert, 1659, 5 parts in one volume in-folio, title, (18)-125-1 bl-(8) p.; 63-1 bl.-(6)-2 bl. p., (16)-1 ;95-1 bl.-(13)-1 bl. p, pp. 1-153, (4), pp. 161-241, 1 bl p; (25)-75-(8)-1 bl. p., contemporary full brown calf binding (binding worn and missing, front spine split, about half of the spine detached, a few leaves browned). Good copy inside. First edition of 1658 with relay title and small paper strip added at the time. Superb work of the converted libertine Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin. The work is illustrated by François Chauveau with four title-frontispices, fifteen engravings out of text and five plates of large monograms. The text is enhanced by 135 unsigned woodcuts, lettering, and culs-de-lampe, made of figures in the manner of engraved titles. In this religious work illustrated in a pure baroque style, the author strives to highlight the incomparable source of poetry that is Christianity, the only one capable, according to him, of generating masterpieces. Divided into thirty days, the work is presented in the form of a dialogue between Eusebius the pious and Philédon the libertine, which makes it possible to follow the path of the skeptic, from conversion to the contemplative life and to mystical union. Tchemerzine, II, 833.
