By a master of black humor (André Breton) - FORNERET (Xavier - Lot 59
By a master of black humor (André Breton) - FORNERET (Xavier). Two destinies. Drama in five acts. Paris, J.N. Barba, 1834, 8°, frontispiece, 178 p., light brown half cloth à la Bradel, smooth spine, title-piece (covers soiled and faded, complete with errata f. glued to the back cover, ex. faded, browning and staining). Of great rarity. "Two Destinies" is a drama by Xavier Forneret in five acts, comprising eleven, ten, eighteen, ten and eleven scenes respectively, published on author's account in 1834. This play is the first work published by its author. Characteristic of the frenetic romantic movement, it has never been performed. Xavier Forneret is associated by literary critics with the minor romantics, "too narrow a term", according to Jean-Luc Steinmetz, "to contain so many disparate personalities, which no amount of understatement can reduce to mercy". According to François Dominique, his original personality "is linked to this tradition of individuals who form a remarkable whole: Alphonse Rabbe, Philothée O'Neddy, Petrus Borel, Philarète Chasles, Alphonse Esquiros, Lacenaire and Charles". His work was brought out of oblivion by the Surrealists, who compared him to Lautréamont and Raymond Roussel. He is considered by André Breton as a precursor of automatic writing and a master of black humour.
