In March 1871, Gustave Courbet joined the Commune with enthusiasm. Soon elected to the Council of the Commune, he became delegate for public education and president of the new Federation of Artists. But his dream of a pacifist fraternity was shattered by the violence that marked the end of the Commune. The painter was quickly arrested, brought before the council of war and sentenced to six months in prison, which he served in the Sainte-Pélagie prison in Versailles / Set of 2 pieces.
