MENGS (Antoine Raphaël). Complete works of... - Lot 18 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
MENGS (Antoine Raphaël). Complete works of Antoine Raphaël Mengs, first painter to the king of Spain, containing various treatises on the theory of painting. Translated from the Italian. Paris, Hôtel de Thou, 1786, 2 vols. 4°, [2]-VIII-[2]-354 and [4]-392 p., contemporary half-bound in brown basane (spines rubbed, title-pieces missing, some browning). First French edition, translated from the Italian by M. Jansen (the work was indeed first published in Italian by Bodoni). A good copy. The work begins with the memoirs on the life and works of Mengs (1728-1779) by the knight d'Azara and a notice on Mengs' paintings, followed by treatises on the painter's painting, as well as on the beauty, the taste, the technical aspect of painting as well as on various famous painters (Raphael, Correggio, Titian). In the preface there is a paragraph by Klopstock (the German editor) and Fuessli. A painter at the court of the King of Poland, he joined the Spanish court at the request of Charles III, King of Spain. His paintings, quite early on in the neo-classical style (see his Cleopatra), brought him fame and wealth, and the writings he left on painting and the arts are full of research and subtlety.
