[APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume]. "SIC demonstration" of June 24, 1917. P., SIC, 1917, booklet 4° square, 8 p., stapled, in black half cloth cardboard folder (creases, a few tears and small marg. losses due to the fragility of the paper). Original edition enriched with a letter: "to Niny Guyard [the only pianist on stage due to the scarcity of musicians in these times of war] / whose little hands / were a whole orchestra / Germaine Albert-Birot". Published on the occasion of the first performance of "Mamelles de Tiresias" at the Maubel Conservatory on June 24, 1917, this publication includes a drawing by Picasso, an original full-page woodcut by Henri Matisse, the list of characters and actors, and poems by Max Jacob, Jean Cocteau, Pierre Reverdy and Pierre-Albert Birot. Les Mamelles de Tirésias" is a surrealist drama by Guillaume Apollinaire, first performed at the Maubel Conservatory on June 24, 1917 in a production by Pierre Albert-Birot. The set is by Serge Férat, the costumes by Irène Lagut and the music by Germaine Albert-Birot. The story is based on that of Teresa, who changes her sex to gain power among men. Her goal is to change customs, rejecting the past to establish gender equality. The play drew the wrath of the press, which raged against Apollinaire and Albert-Birot. It also caused several Cubists, led by Juan Gris, to distance themselves from Apollinaire. The young Aragon, on the other hand, urged on by Albert-Birot, wrote a glowing review in SIC. Extremely rare.
