First edition complete with 100 chromolithograph plates - JONES (Owen). The Grammar of Ornament. Illustrated by Examples from Various Styles of Ornament. One hundred Folios Plates, Drawn on Stone by F. Bedford and Printed in Colours by Day and Son. London, Day and Son, 1856, broadside, ed. bindings in half brown basane with corners, gilt edges (binding rubbed and slightly stained, 1 corner crushed, scattered russets). First edition. Well complete with 100 superb chromolithograph plates protected by serpents. "The Grammar of Ornament", first published in 1856, is an important work. It encouraged artists to be open to other forms of decorative art, from cultures in countries Jones had traveled through or studied. Among the hundred or so chromolithographic plates, we find ornaments from China, Persia, India and Arabia. Rare and good copy.
