MONTHERLANT, Henry Millon de (1895-1972) was a French novelist, essayist and playwright. Often referred to by the sole name of Montherlant, he is the author of some 70 works and is best known for his novel "Les Jeunes Filles" (1936-1939) and his plays "La Reine morte" (1942), "Le Maître de Santiago" (1947) and "La Ville dont le prince est un enfant" (1951). Correspondence including 1 letter to an unidentified correspondent, 3 letters to Louis Lebrun of Maison Grasset, 1 to Richard Heyd, and 1 to Franz Hellens.- 1. Undated and addressee unknown, autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-8 on an in-4 sheet of paper on the letterhead of Bernard Grasset, Publisher (1 fold torn without missing). I have pictured to myself all this false literature that is being done, these sorts of pretentious fashions put on by the little nincompoops who have nothing to say, - like the one that consisted in saying, during one winter, that someone who could not appreciate a poularde or distinguish two crus was unable to feel Racine..." Etc. "Etc.- 2. 06.01.1932, autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-4, addressed to Louis LEBRUN of the Maison Grasset, from Fez, asking him to book a trip and send books. Envelope kept.- 3. 04.10.1932, autograph letter signed, 1 page in-4, addressed to Louis LEBRUN, from Fez. While everything was ready for his departure in military operations, his wounds oblige him to keep the bed, he "gives up this project and returns to Algiers" where it is necessary to send him the proofs of Mors et vita which must leave at the time envisaged. He will then return to Paris. 4. 22.02.1933, autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-4, addressed from Algiers to Louis LEBRUN. After having asked for some books: "On the small table where I dedicate my copies, I saw one day a typewritten list of works from you, which, by their mediocrity, seemed to me to be a list of unsaleables, that you intended to a wholesale sale. I take the liberty of pointing out to you that there were two books there which, even if they did not sell, should be kept... Etc. He gives the titles. He announces that he is correcting the first proofs of La Relève. 5. 14.11.1951, autograph letter signed, 1 page and 6 lines in-12, addressed to Richard HEYD of the Éditions Ides et Calendes in Neuchâtel. For La ville [La ville dont le prince est un enfant] "there are only 3 articles yet, all of them good (Arts, Opéra, Aurore) but this play is receiving an extraordinary welcome"... Etc. Proposes to announce the publication of the play. Envelope kept.- 6. 01.05.1954, autograph letter signed, 1 ½ page in-4, addressed to Franz HELLENS whom he thanks for his review of The Rose [The Sand Rose (1968) A first version, truncated, was published out of print and under a pseudonym in 1938; then The Love Story of the Sand Rose in 1954]. "If I liked your account of The Love Story, which does not go looking for noon at two o'clock, as several critics have done.
