GIDE, André (1869-1951), two draft letters, one addressed to Roger MARTIN DU GARD about the Nobel Prize, the other to SAINT-JOHN PERSE. Proofs of "Le Retour". Includes 6 autograph sheets of drafts and notes, large in-4: 2 anopistograph pages: draft of a letter to Roger MARTIN DU GARD who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1937, while Gide has just received it (1947) and does not want to go to Stockholm, but does not want to appear ungrateful. ½ page anopistograph: Instructions in case of death (?) 4 in number. "2° Two checks (one of which is for 1,600,000+) to be taken from the 9th locker" ... Etc. 2 ½ anopistograph pages: draft of a letter to [Alexis] LEGER [Saint-John Perse]. Requesting information for his trip to Baltimore (1948) and asking for help for a protégé. Enclosed are the galley proofs of Le Retour (Neuchâtel-Paris, Ides et Calendes, 1946, in-8, pp. 17-36; numerous autograph corrections by Gide. Interesting proofs showing the placement of the lines. Perhaps the first proofs.
