SURVAGE, Léopold (1879-1968), whose real name was Léopold Frédéric Léopoldovitch STÜRZWAGE, was a Russian painter who became a French citizen in 1927. He devoted himself to monumental painting in the 1950s and 1960s: a fresco on the theme of Peace at the Palais des Congrès in Liège, which led him to stay eighteen months in Belgium in 1958, drew the cartoons Le Coq et le Cheval for the Manufacture des Gobelins and illustrated literary works. Two letters and a card addressed to George CRETEN (1887-1966): 1. 18.09.1953: autograph letter signed, 1 page in-12. "My painting "The Mermaid" is ready, I hope it is well done. I am waiting for a word from you to know that our poget [sic, project] to change gallery has been realized and that the project of Opening with the theme "The Mermaid" is still in sight? ». He then announces that his wife slipped on the floor and broke her femoral neck. Announces in PS that he is a knight of the Legion of Honor. Envelope retained.- 2. 22.01.1954: autograph letter signed, 1 ½ page in-12. After giving news of his wife: "I was very disappointed with this misunderstanding of the exhibition "The Mermaid" which for me ends in a fishtail and a round trip bill. [...] Finally, Belgium is not good for me [sic]. On the other hand, I will have a very big exhibition in Rome"... Etc.- 3. 02.03.1954: on the back of the invitation card for the presentation of the insignia of knighthood of the Legion of Honour a dozen autographed lines in which he announces the exhibition in Rome (about forty paintings) and that he is invited to the Biennale in Venice./ Set of 2 letters + envelopes and a card.
