SADE (D.A.F.). Idea on novels. Published... - Lot 49 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
SADE (D.A.F.). Idea on novels. Published with a preface, notes and unpublished documents by Octave Uzanne. Paris, Édouard Rouveyre, 1878, in-12, frontispiece, XLIII-53 p., paperback, filled cover (cover faded). The frontispiece, which seems to have been added, is printed on Chine: it is the famous 19th century imaginary portrait by H. Biberstein representing Sade subjected to the four winds of diabolic suggestions. Printed at 100 copies. Ex. on Hollande (not mentioned in the justification). First separate edition. In 1799 Sade published "Les Crimes de l'amour" preceded by a short essay entitled "Idée sur les romans". Not without a certain duplicity, Sade defends himself from being the author of the libertine works attributed to him and talks about literature, drawing a very personal picture of the history of the novel from Antiquity to his contemporaries. Between various comments on Voltaire, Rousseau, Crébillon, Madame de La Fayette, Richardson, Marivaux, Scarron, l'Abbé Prévost or Restif de la Bretonne, the little treatise, peppered with advice to young writers and theoretical reflections on the process of literary creation, answers several questions on the origin and meaning of the novel and explains why it must paint vice in order to teach virtue to readers / [SADE]. Justine, ou Les Malheurs de la vertu. Volume one [Volume two]. Second edition, corrected and enlarged. In Holland, 1797, 2 volumes bound in 1 vol. in-16, frontispiece, 143-1 blank p. and free frontispiece, 143-1 blank p., old half vellum, smooth spine, title-piece (spine tired, stains, traces of handling).
