With dispatch and proofs, bound in full morocco by Semet et - Lot 33
With dispatch and proofs, bound in full morocco by Semet et Plumelle - GOURMONT (Remy de). Déodat. Paris, Édition du Mercure de France, 1893, in-12, 53 p., covers and spine preserved. First edition printed at 290 numbered copies monogrammed by the author, including three special papers. Ex. of the current edition (n° 84). Bound with a set of corrected proofs and an autograph note signed on the Théâtre d'Art by its founder Paul Fort. A model of the title puts the mention "Bibliothèque du Théâtre d'Art". This mention is not included. The justification mentioned 150 copies. The whole is bound in full purple morocco, boards framed with a double fillet, one thin and the other wide, spine with pinched nerves fully decorated, title and date piece at the end, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges on witnesses, inner boards framed with two series of gilt dotted lines framed with three gilt fillets, inside lined with light brown silk, gilt edges on witnesses, case lined with the same (edges of case lightened up) Binding signed Semet et Plumelle. Signed autograph letter from Remy de Gourmont to Paul Fort. Play performed for the first time on the stage of the Théâtre d'Art, salle du Théâtre-moderne on December 11, 1892. Wanting to offer a stage to Maurice Maeterlinck, whose dramas he admired, Paul Fort created in 1889, with Lugné-Poe, the Théâtre d'Art which became in 1893 the Théâtre de l'œuvre. This theatre helped to reveal the Nordic playwrights Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg to the French public. Note the fine brown paper with a repeated gilt moiré lion. Spine very slightly faded. Superb.
