PICASSO.- DECAUNES (Luc). The Present Code or the Infirm as - Lot 863
PICASSO.- DECAUNES (Luc). The Present Code or the Infirm as it is. Poems. With a frontispiece by Pablo Picasso. P., Éditions Soutes, 1938, 8°, 107 p., br. (e.g. warped, brown and stained cover, small marg. stroke at the end of the vol.). Original edition enriched with 2 handwritten letters from the author, one of which is on the letterhead of the Cahiers du Sud and enriched with a nice little drawing. First work by the author. In the spring of 1937, Luc Decaunes, then a young left-wing activist and founder of "Soutes", the review of international revolutionary culture, had met Cécile Éluard, daughter of Gala and Paul Éluard, whom he was to marry in November 1938. It was through her that he came into contact with Éluard and Picasso. On the occasion of his first book, a collection of some fifty poems, Picasso gave him a beautiful etching, a surrealist portrait of Dora Maar, to cover the printing costs (Cramer, Pablo Picasso, Les Livres illustrés, 30). Rare.
