DERAIN-DALIZE (René). Ballad of the poor Macchabé badly buried. Poem by René Dalize decorated with six unpublished woods and engraved by André Derain followed by two souvenirs by Guillaume Apollinaire and André Salmon. P., Impr. Bernouard (relay label on the cover: éditions de la Galerie Simon, Paris), [1919], 4° carré, br., with all margins (cover burnished). First edition printed at 135 copies num. signed by Derain. 1/110 vergé d'Arches. Beautiful illustration by André Derain composed of 6 woodcuts, 4 of which are out of text. This danse macabre was composed on the Front by a childhood friend of Guillaume Apollinaire, the poet René Dalize, and published for the first time in a trench magazine, "Les Imberbes", which the author edited with the poet J. Le Roy and the printer François Bernouard. When Dalize died on May 7, 1917, his friends Apollinaire and Salmon began publishing his Ballade, followed by their obituaries entitled Im [sic] Memoriam. The work, illustrated by Derain, was finished printing in December 1919 on the presses of François Bernouard. Apollinaire, swept away by the Spanish flu in 1918, did not see the book finished.
