BROUET.- BARRES (Maurice).
Greco or the Secret of Toledo. Twenty-three original etchings engraved by Auguste Brouet. P., Dewambez, 1928, 4°, 31 serpentine etchings, 15 of which are off-text, in sheets, filled cover, edited shirt in rooted fawn half-basane (case missing). Limited edition of 218 copies, num. 1/10 copies reserved for the engraver and the publisher, called artist's copies. Our copy on watermarked laid paper is signed in pencil by Auguste Brouet. The artist began reproducing Rembrandt's plates in his youth, before working with Gustave Moreau, Whistler and Degas. Gustave Geffroy, wanting to characterize the position of this artist who is little known to the public and whose works are sought after by informed amateurs, said: "He illustrates in the half-light", which emphasizes the chiaroscuro learned from Rembrandt.
