DE RIDDER, André (1888-1961), economist, novelist, art histo - Lot 118
DE RIDDER, André (1888-1961), economist, novelist, art historian. Two letters addressed to Georges MARLIER (1898-1968), art critic who defends an art integrated in a strong state and after the capitulation participates in the "Nouveau Journal". - In the first letter dated December 28, 1940 from Antwerp (3 p. 4° and qqs lines). A very interesting letter: "Your proposal to collaborate on the special page - artistic and historical - of the "Nouveau Journal" appeals to me, all the more so as you are submitting a subject that is close to my heart: "Rubens and the Antwerp Baroque". But I am asking for a reprieve, to make up my mind and to get down to work. I'm not very brave at the moment, given so many things that depress me a bit (you know that I believe in the "new order", but I have the impression that it is being created in our country under very singular conditions and by means of "new men" who generally don't inspire me with confidence). "Etc. - In the second letter dated January 17, 1944 from Antwerp (1 p. 4°, the bottom of the page has been wet and is difficult to read). De Ridder insistently asks for reproductions, especially a photograph of a painting by Gustave De Smet. Set of 2 letters.
