BARRÈS, Maurice (1862-1923). French writer and politician wh - Lot 115
BARRÈS, Maurice (1862-1923). French writer and politician who advocated nationalism. Letter of three pages 8° undated (reinforced fold), but must have been written in 1902, addressed to Jules DELAHAYE (1851-1925), French politician (baker, deputy, senator). It was on 21 November 1892 that he distinguished himself by denouncing in the gallery of the House the compromises of the political class in the Panama scandal. Following his intervention, a parliamentary commission of inquiry was set up. Very nice letter: "I have not left politics, as you suggest, because of the disgust that it drags on after it. I am always ready for battle, for danger, but garrison life and intrigue: no, I have had enough. ...there's a need to maintain the intellectual standards of my time. As there is to purify, to avenge morality. I am marking a great ambition for you (this one), but you yourself had a great one and you justified it by filling the session. "Etc. We date the letter according to the publications cited, particularly "La Revue contemporaines" whose fasc. including "Their Figures" (Panama with Delahaye's interpellation) appeared at the end of 1901.
