GORSE (Pierre). The monumental and picturesque Pyrenees drawn from nature and lithographed. 1st part: Luchon and its surroundings. Luchon, chez Lafon, (ca 1850), 4° oblong, full percaline ed. night blue, upper plate titled gold in an ornamented and gilded frame, smooth back titled gold (partially split jaws, blunt corners, inner hinge split, russet, clear wetting at the lower edge and in the upper right corner of the whole work without damage to the lithographs). Includes 34 lithographs, including title, 8 on double page and 1 in colour. The lithographs printed by Becquet frères are in black on a tinted background or on Chine appliqué. Pierre Gorse is a painter-lithographer (1816-1875) renowned for his drawings of the Pyrenees. A tireless visitor to these montages for many years, he produced the most important collection of drawings on this subject. His works constitute an essential documentation of the mountain landscapes as well as of the customs and habits of its inhabitants. Detailed list of lithographs on request.
