RICAUT (Paul). History of the present state of the Ottoman Empire, containing the political maxims of the Turks; the main points of the Mohammedan religion, its sects, heresies, & its various kinds of religious; their military discipline, with an exact account of their forces by sea and land, and of the income of the state. by M. Briot. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgank, 1670, in-32, 498 (including title-frontispiece)-[6] p., 18 folding plates and a vignette in the text, full vellum at the time. Second French edition. This State of the Ottoman Empire, published in English in 1668, is the first detailed work on Turkish customs, resources and Ottoman politics. It is even considered one of the sources of Montesquieu's "Persian Letters", of which he had a copy in his library. Ricaut was secretary to the British Ambassador to Constantinople from 1661 to 1667. In 1663, he wrote the articles of the peace treaty between England and the Ottoman government and obtained the privilege for English ships to be exempted from visiting rights.
