LE MOYNE (Pierre). Saint Lovys or the holy... - Lot 27 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
LE MOYNE (Pierre). Saint Lovys or the holy crown reconquered. Heroic poem. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1658, in-12, [116, of which frontispiece]-578-[2]-1 white p., 17 figures h.t. by Chauveau, full contemporary vellum with small flaps (front. with a fold and a small lack of paper in the upper white margin, a torn sheet without missing: 339/340). From the Nordkirschen library (ex-libris). Belonging to the Jesuit order, Le Moyne (1602-1672) is the author of this epic poem, entitled: Saint Louis, ou la Sainte couronne reconquise sur les infidèles (1653) - note the deletion of "sur les infidèles"), attracted him, for some time, a great reputation. It was imaginative, pompous, and was seen as a national Iliad, but later it was criticised more for the swelling and extravagance of the style, the weakness of the plan, and the lack of interest. Between the two judgements is Boileau's, who said of Father Lemoyne that, if he was too crazy to be said good, he was too high to say bad. Today, what is striking in the Saint Louis is the excess of Baroque imagination. It is in this poem that we find these famous verses: "The two eyes of Cnemon, with two pierced arrows, / Even into his brain were thrust, / And night came to him through the gates of day".
