Theatre - LE BRUN (Pierre). Speech on the... - Lot 26 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
Theatre - LE BRUN (Pierre). Speech on the Comedy or historical and dogmatic treatise on theatre games and other comic entertainments suffered or condemned since the first century of the Church until now. With a discourse on the plays, taken from Sacred Scripture. Second edition, increased by more than half. Paris, Widow Delaulne, 1731, in-12, XLVIII-360-[20, including the "Catalogue des livres nouveaux qui se vendent chez Delaulne"] p., full brown basane of the period, decorated spine with nerves, title piece (traces of wear, flattened caps, blunt corners). Important work for the history of the theatre. Le Brun's "Le Discours sur la Comédie" (The Discourse on Comedy) was first published in 1694, shortly after Bossuet's "Maximes et Réflexions sur la Comédie" (Maxims and Reflections on Comedy), in response to the "Lettre d'un Théologien" (by Gaffaro) that Boursault had published at the head of the 1694 edition of his comedies, in which he praised the theatre. Bossuet and Le Brun immediately refuted this theory, casting anathema on the theatre and actors, and comparing them to prostitutes. Le Brun revisited his work, and this second edition was not published until after his death by Abbé Granet.
