LAMB (Charles and Mary). Tales from Shakespeare.... - Lot 555 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
LAMB (Charles and Mary). Tales from Shakespeare. With Twelve Illustrations in Permanent Photography from the Boydell Gallery. London, Bickers ands Son, 1880, 8°, [8]-386 p., 20 mounted photographs, full green calf of the time, flat framed with a small gilt roulette wheel, richly decorated spine ribs, title pieces (claws and small blows, dark spine). A fine copy of this children's book in English, published in 1807, with a selection of stories taken and adapted from Shakespeare's work by Charles Lamb and his sister Mary Lamb. Tales from Shakespeare brings the complicated drama and storylines of Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies to a simple level that children can read and understand. Although this adaptation includes fragments and sentences taken directly from Shakespeare's work, both writers deliberately avoided words that are unknown or less common in modern English. Mary Lamb took the comedies and the preface for herself, while Charles wrote the tragedies. In addition to his essays, this book became Charles' most famous work. However, the success of this book is due mainly to Mary, although her name was not even mentioned in the first two editions.
