ROPS (Félicien). - Lot 466
ROPS (Félicien). "War of 1870." Lead pencil and ink on tracing paper, titled and signed in the lower right corner, mounted under mat and gilt wood frame. Dim. frame : 52 x 64 cm ; subject : 31 x 44 cm. Preparatory study for "Un campement de francs-tireurs dans le bois Mazarin", pencil on paper executed the same year. The subject was certainly inspired by an episode lived in Thozée, during the winter of 1870-71. In a letter to Edmond Lambrichs, he recounts: "I still had the energy to go 6 leagues from here to prowl - in the border woods. There are snipers' encampments there in the snow (...). It's superb of fantastic rags, I'm in the process of making a wood for the Illustration of London". The Franco-Prussian war was the occasion for a poignant study on the spot; Rops was strongly marked by the discovery of the battlefield of Sedan, alongside his cousin, the writer Camille Lemonnier.
