DESCHAUMES (Edmond). The country of the white negroes. [Sur-title: Adventures of a Frenchman on the Road to Chad] Illustrations by Gerlier. Paris, Marpon et Flammarion, [1893], 4°, 286, demi-toile bordeaux. Which model of colonization and development should Africa follow to enter a world that colonial expansion designates as modern: that of France or that of America? And whose interest is it in entrusting political power to: women or men? These are the daring questions posed in 1893 by "Le Pays des nègres blancs", one of the many adventure novels published at a time when European powers were sharing Africa's immense territory with the aim of "civilising" its inhabitants. Taking colonialist propaganda and the feminist hypothesis at their word, the novelist Edmond Deschaumes thus puts the possibility and the way of colonizing the "black continent" to the test of fiction, in the form of a double utopian narrative. But his novel, with hindsight, has other merits: it reveals, often unbeknownst to him, the unthought-of aspects of official political discourse and shows why the colonial project, even if it was driven by the most altruistic intentions, was at the heart of what we now call ethnocide. Old books, modern problems.
