Kehl], De l'Imprimerie de la Société littéraire typographique,1785-1789, 70 vols. 8°, full marbled calf, gilded framing lace on the plates, smooth spine, red title and tomaison pieces, gilded fillets, fleurons and edges, gilded lace on the cups, crushed raspberry paper endpapers (bits and spines rubbed or even skinned, some caps damaged, some pages burnished, trace of purple mould at the head of the 69th vol, very fresh inside). This edition includes 1 title-frontispiece decorated with the bust of Voltaire, 1 dedication with the portrait of Frédéric-Guillaume Prince of Prussia, 93 figures by Moreau le Jeune engraved by Bacquoy, Simonet, Lingée, etc. (not collated). After Voltaire's death (1694-1778), Beaumarchais decided to print posthumously the writings of the great philosopher. To this end and to escape royal censorship, he established his printing works on the lands of the Margrave of Baden, in the citadel of Kehl. To finance the printing of texts, Beaumarchais launched a subscription. He wanted to offer a luxurious and high quality edition, so he bought the beautiful typefaces made by Baskerville, the famous English printer.
