SPALLANZANI. Experiments on the digestion of humans and diff - Lot 59
SPALLANZANI. Experiments on the digestion of humans and different species of animals. With Considerations on his method of conducting experiments, and the practical consequences that can be drawn in medicine from his discoveries; by Jean Senebier. Geneva, Barthelemi Chirol, 1783, 8°, title, CLIX-[1 (errata) p., 1 f. white, 320 p., full flamed brown calf of the period, smooth back decorated with guilloche pattern gilt fillets, red marbled title piece, dishes framed with a gilt Greek roulette wheel, gilt guilloche pattern on the cups, marbled edges. Nice copy. Following the work of Réaumur, Spallanzani demonstrates the action of gastric juice on the digestion of meats and practices artificial digestions . He demonstrates that gastric juice dissolves food by making a guinea fowl ingest two wooden tubes containing cooked, chewed veal meat, the tubes being pierced with holes so that gastric juice can penetrate them. He only covers them with a cloth to close the entrance. In the tube that comes out after 22 hours, there are no more traces of food. A fine specimen.
