SOLIS (Antonio de). History of the conquest of Mexico or New - Lot 58
SOLIS (Antonio de). History of the conquest of Mexico or New Spain by Fernand Cortez. Fifth edition. Paris, La Compagnie des libraires, 1730, 2 vols. in-12 of [32]-604-[26] and [12]-560-[22] p., 14 plates and maps, most of them folding, contemporary brown calf binding, richly decorated spine, title and tomaison parts, red edges. One of the many editions of the French translation of this great classic of Spanish history and literature. Secretary to Philip IV, Antonio de Solis y Ribadeneira (1610-1686) obtained the important position of Historiographer of the Indies in 1666 and devoted himself to writing the history of the conquest of Mexico by Cortes, from his appointment to the fall of Mexico City. His work, published in Madrid two years before his death, is one of the main sources to be consulted on the subject. It was an immediate success due to both its historical interest and its remarkable literary qualities, and was translated into several languages. The first French edition was published in 1691. Small binding snags, flattened caps, a damaged corner.
