First published in 1777 in English (barely one year after the declaration of independence of the United States of America), this work by Robertson (1721-1793), principal of the University of Edinburgh and historiographer of his British Majesty for Scotland. Covering the discovery of America, as well as the conquest of Mexico and Peru, it has often been praised for its rigorous work based on bibliographical sources; t. 1 also contains an interesting catalogue of the Spanish books and manuscripts that Robertson cites in this story./ Ens. 4 vol.
