MENESTRIER (François). The Art of emblems. Lyon, Benoist Coral, 1662, in-12, frontispiece, title vignette, [8]-160-[6], full brown granite calf of the time, decorated nimbus back (burnished leg. paper, upper cap flattened, front bit split at the beginning, blunt corners). Rare original edition of Ménestrier's first theoretical work on the art of emblems, illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Johann Jakob Thurneysen (1636-1711) after Thomas Blanchet (1614-1689), 3 vignettes in the text and 9 plates of emblems including one signed Karl Audran (1594-1674). The dedicatory epistle is addressed to Count Philippe de Saint Martin d'Aglié, whose coat of arms and motto appear on the frontispiece.
