Henri III's favourite - GIRARD [Guillaume]. Story of the lif - Lot 22

Henri III's favourite - GIRARD [Guillaume]. Story of the life of the Duke of Espernon. Divided into three parts. Paris, Montalant, 1730, 4 vol. in-12, portrait-frontispice, [24]-387-1 blanche p. ; title, 450 p. ; title, 543-1 blanche p., and title, 514 p., full brown speckled calf of the time, smooth spines richly decorated, title and tomaison pieces (some clinging to the headdresses). Beautiful copy. Second edition in-12 of this biography of the Duke of Epernon written by his secretary, archdeacon of Angoulême. This life, quite well written, and full of singular facts is less the particular history of this Duke than that of everything that happened in France from 1570 to 1642 (Quérard, III, 361). Jean-Louis de Nogaret, Lord of Valletta and Caumont, Duke of Epernon (1554-1642), a French soldier, was one of King Henry III's favorites before becoming his favorite, together with Duke Anne de Joyeuse and then alone after the latter's death. For three reigns (Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII), the Duc d'Épernon was one of the main figures of the French nobility.
