DAVILER. Architectural course which includes the Vignole orders, with commentaries, figures and descriptions of his most beautiful buildings, and those of Michelangelo [...] / by sieur A.-C. Daviler [...]. New edition [...]. Paris, Jean Mariette, 1720, 2 vols. 4° in continuous pagination (920 p.), with for each volume a title-frontispiece and a title, framed text, numerous additional paginations, complete with the very numerous plates engraved in the text, except for the text on double page and folding double page, full brown basane of the period, decorated spines (worn bindings, traces of handling). Handwritten mark of the period: "Collegii Parisiensis Societatis Jesu". Good copy. Translation considerably annotated and enriched by Augustin-Charles d'Aviler de : "Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura". The 2nd vol. is entitled: "Explanation of architectural terms which includes architecture, mathematics ... masonry, cutting ... by Mr. A.-C. Daviler", same address and date. Brunet, II, 540: "for nearly a century the best work of this kind that we had in France. Augustin-Charles d'Aviler (or Daviler) (1653-1701) is a French architect. He was one of the main promoters of the vignolesque canon, but far from being content to publish it, he developed it by proposing variants of motifs to give more flexibility and expressiveness to the rigid system of the five orders.
