Peter van der Kun, Latinized as Petrus Cunaeus, born in 1586 in Vlissingen and died in 1638 in Leiden, is a Dutch philologist and jurisconsult. Considered one of the most learned men of his time, he was appreciated by Scaliger, Heinsius, Grotius, Casaubon, Baudius, Vulcanius, Drusius with whom he was connected. The learned languages of East and West were all equally familiar to him. Theology, jurisprudence, philosophy and politics also exercised his knowledge-loving mind. His work 'De Republica Hebraeorum' is considered to be 'the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic. The research of Cunaeus, who was among the greatest Christian scholars of Jewish texts in a generation that included Scaliger, Grotius, and Vulcanius in the Netherlands, Johannes Buxtorf, father and son in Germany, and John Selden and Heinsius in England, is at the height of Protestant interest in Jewish texts in relation to politics and religious authority. Cunaeus, who also corresponded with contemporary Jewish scholars such as Manasse ben Israel, is today best known for his work De Republica Hebraeorum. This work was published at least seven times between 1617 and 1700 and was translated into Dutch, French and English.
