One of the first anti-colonialist books -... - Lot 5 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
One of the first anti-colonialist books - [BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE, Jacques-Henri]. Trip to Isle de France, Isle de Bourbon, Cap de Bonne Espérance, etc. With new observations on nature and men. Amsterdam, and is in Paris, Merlin, 1773, 2 vol. 8°, [4]-328 p. and [4]-278 p., 6 figures including 3 folding and 3 (out of 4) folding paintings, full brown calf of the time, smooth decorated backs (several snags, slight browning, name of owner repeated on the front guard f., including the first cancelled). Good copy of the first edition of one of the first anti-colonialist books of the Enlightenment. This book, published anonymously, has become very rare. It is illustrated with 6 plates: three drawn by Moreau and engraved by Masquelier, Née and Duclos, and three folders engraved by Colas. The book also contains 3 (out of 4) folding tables of "Nautical Observations" (the first one is missing). Two of J. M. Moreau's engravings have remained famous because they represent the sad condition of slaves at that time and in those latitudes. Sent in 1766 to the Ile de France as a captain-engineer, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814) let himself be carried away by his passion for adventure and left with all the more hesitation, as it seemed that he was authorized to try to apply his ideas of colonization to Madagascar. He stayed there for three years and contributed valuable information for the knowledge and development of the Ile de France, now Mauritius.
