ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca 1955-60). Oil and watercolor - Lot 446
ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca 1955-60). Oil and watercolor on paper, signed in the lower right corner, mounted under a white mat. Dim. mat: 50 x 40 cm; subject: 31 x 24,5 cm. After studying art, Zhang Hua (1898-1970) taught painting in China for a few years. He then lived in Canada and then in New York where he painted in a figurative vein, concentrating on the representation of New York skyscrapers. Around 1935, he left for Europe and settled in Paris where he studied at the Grande Chaumière. There he met Pan Yuliang, Sanyu and Zao Wou-Ki. It was at this time that he evolved towards lyrical abstraction. Having almost never exhibited, Zhang Hua's work remains little known.
