ANDRE (Francis). - Lot 508
ANDRE (Francis). The cursed oil tanker. Unpublished, [L'Auteur], 1930, large 4°, 40 p., br., cover filled, titled and illustrated with a vignette. Original edition printed at 50 copies comprising 36 superb full-page black compositions and 9 black compositions glued on blue paper and interleaved throughout the work. Extremely rare and beautiful copy. Born to a lawyer father, Francis André (1906-1972) grew up in the countryside. With his law degree in his pocket, he dreams of adventure and joins the merchant navy. At the same time, he self-published booklets with his drawings, his other passion. Francis André is an original. In his apartment on Place Flagey, where he moved in when he returned to dry land, he had set up an electric train that brought dishes from the kitchen to the living room and tinkered with a system of pulleys to bring drinks from the ground floor café to the outside. He then worked as a journalist for "Le Rouge et le Noir", a literary, satirical and political weekly. After the war, back from captivity, he became a carpenter and stage manager for the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. He collaborated, among other things, on several shows by Maurice Béjart. In the workshops of the Mint, Francis André spent his free time manufacturing drawing machines and many new automatons. In 1971, thanks to Olivier Strebelle, these creations were shown to the public for the first time.
