First edition enriched with a consignment: "à Monsieur Edmond About [French writer, journalist and art critic, 1828-1885] / Hommage de son très dévoué confrère / Louis Gonse"...Edition limited to 1400 ex. num. Louis Gonse (1846-1921), is an art historian, editor-in-chief of the Gazette des beaux-arts, member of the Conseil supérieur des Beaux-Arts, vice-president of the Conseil des Musées nationaux. He is best known as one of the first specialists in Japanese art. In 1883, he organized an important retrospective of Japanese art and published "Japanese Art" in the same year, which was the first serious and influential work on the subject.
