Nikolai Mikhailovich Przhevalsky (1839-1888) is a naturalist of Polish origin who was an officer in the Russian Imperial Army, a geographer and an explorer of Central Asia. He travelled through unknown regions of the Western world, such as northern Tibet. He is considered to be the first European to encounter the only known species of wild horse, Przewalski's horse, to which he gave his name. The expedition was a complete success. For the sum of 18,000 rubles, and at the price of the loss of 24 horses, 55 camels and the dog Faust, the expedition reached unknown regions and brought back 5,000 specimens of plants, 1,000 birds and 3,000 species of insects, as well as 70 reptiles and the skins and furs of 130 different mammals.
