Nice copy. First edition of the rare deluxe edition. One of the most beautiful works of the early 19th c. with views of the valleys and picturesque landscapes of Graubünden, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. The publication of the work was prompted by the completion in 1823 of two new routes (shown on the map on the back) through the Alps between Switzerland and Italy, one over the San Bernardino Pass and the other over the Splugenberg. Johann Jakob Meyer (1749 1829) began his artistic training at the age of fourteen with Heinrich Füssli and then learned engraving and aquatint techniques in the workshop of the engraver Franz Hegi. As a young man, he regularly explored the countryside, painting and drawing before nature. He continued his training in 1811, working with the famous family of artists named Lory in Neuenburg. He produced the drawings for the present work in 1823. Meyer travelled extensively in the Alps. Meyer's landscapes were much in demand during his lifetime. Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, his son Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and Czar Nicholas of Russia were all collectors and patrons of his work.
