GRASSET, Eugene - The story of the four Aymon sons, very noble and very valiant knights. Illustrated with colour compositions by Eugène Grasset. Engraving and printing by Charles Gillot. P., H. Launette, 1883, 4°, [4]-224-[16] p., cherry half-marocco with corners, gilt fillet separating the plates, smooth spine finely decorated and mosaic, gilt head, cover, bookplate (infer. cap and very light rubbed cuts) (binding signed J. Weckesser). The most beautiful illustrated edition of this text inspired by a medieval legend, decorated on each page with colour compositions by Eugène Grasset using the gillotage process, a new phototypographic process on zinc invented by Charles Gillot in 1872. "Beautiful work, very rare and quoted, which marks an era in the illustration of the modern illustrated book" (Carteret). Nice copy.
