[CHOJECKI] (Charles Edmond). Voyage in the North Seas aboard the corvette Queen Hortense. Scientific notes communicated by the members of the expedition. P., Michel Lévy, 1857, 4°, [8]-632-146 illustrated with 12 out-of-text engravings by Karl Girardet after the watercolours of Giraud and Abrantès, title vignette, two folding maps and a genealogical table. Half red chagrin of the period, spine with 4 ribs, gilded fillets and castors, gilded crowned "N" number in the boxes, gilded separating thread on the plates (worn corners). Journey undertaken by Prince Napoleon in 1856 to Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland and the Scandinavian countries. An activist for the Polish cause, the Polish author, writer and journalist was forced into exile to escape the Russian authorities, and settled in France in 1844. He made many trips to Europe and as far as Egypt where he met Flaubert who later asked him for help in documenting his novels. He also became friends with Prince Napoleon, who became his protector and granted him a position as librarian at the Algerian ministry and then as librarian of the Senate in 1869.
