ROLLIN. Ancient history of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Ass - Lot 17

ROLLIN. Ancient history of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians, Greeks. New edition. Paris, Widow Estienne, 1732-1754, 13 volumes bound in 14 vol. in-12, complete work made up of different editions of the second edition, bindings sometimes slightly different in full brown basane, spines with decorated ribs (several wears, flattened caps, restorations). Good set (uncollated). Charles Rollin, born in Paris in 1661 and died in 1741 in his home town, was a historian and French teacher who devoted the second half of his life to an important editorial activity. This activity revolved around two major concerns: teaching and ancient history. Concerning the first, his major work, intended for educationalists, remains known under the short title of "Traité des études". This text, which summarized the educational experiments carried out by Rollin and others, was highly regarded. For some, its theoretical influence extended to all the educational treatises of the 18th century, including the "Emile"; for others, the direct influence was limited to a few specific experiments. His other line of work was ancient history. A distinguished Latinist and Hellenist, Rollin wrote two monumental sums known as "Ancient History" and "Roman History.
