ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca 1955-60).... - Lot 483 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
ZHANG (Hua). "Composition" (ca 1955-60). Oil and watercolor on paper, signed in the lower right corner, mounted under a white passe-partout and gilt wood frame. Dim. frame : 89 x 69 cm ; subject : 51,5 x 36 cm (fine chips in the frame). After studying art, Zhang Hua (1898-1970) taught painting in China for a few years. He then spent some time in Canada and then in New York, where he painted in a figurative vein, concentrating on the representation of New York skyscrapers. Around 1935, he left for Europe and settled in Paris where he studied at the Grande Chaumière. There he met Pan Yuliang, Sanyu and Zao Wou-Ki. It is at this time that he evolves towards lyrical abstraction. Having almost never exhibited, Hua Zhang's work remains little known.
