ROSIANU (Matei). "Composition" (ca 1940-45).... - Lot 364 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
ROSIANU (Matei). "Composition" (ca 1940-45). Oil on panel, signed with the workshop stamp on the back. Size support and subject : 41,5 x 33,5 cm. Influenced by Cézanne and Bissière, cubist in form, militant in substance, discreet and luminous in the decorative arts, dark in post-war expressionism, Matei Rosianu is an unknown eclectic artist. A painter of Romanian origin (1897-1969), he settled in Paris in 1919 and pursued artistic studies there. Deeply marked by cubism, his first works are still lifes and intimate figurative paintings. In 1929, he joined the Communist Party and added a social dimension to his art. A very active militant and artistic period followed, culminating in the Exhibition of Revolutionary Artists, which he set up in 1934 with Aragon. A little later and against all expectations, he abandoned the political movement and devoted himself to the wallpaper workshop, which he opened under a pseudonym. Mobilized in 1945, he came out of the war with a wounded heart, which inspired his darkest paintings, of a desperate density. In black or in colour, Rosianu's work is subtle, honest and moving.
