MILLER (Henry). - Lot 146
MILLER (Henry). Impressions of Bruges. Autograph manuscript signed, dated May 3, 1953. 5 ff. in blue ink. In a stamped envelope, addressed to Gentil Haesaert, director of the Taptoe Gallery in Brussels. In this text written in English, Henry Miller (1891-1980) praises Bruges and compares his native America to the little Venice of the North: "I have left the sterile and straight labyrinth of the American city, chessboard of progress and postponement. I am wandering in a dream more real, more tangible than the howling, air-conditioned nightmare that Americans take for life (...). This world that was once so familiar, so real, so alive, seemed to have been lost to me centuries ago. Now, here in Bruges, I realize once again that nothing is ever lost, not even a sigh. We are not living in the middle of ruins, but in the very heart of eternity.
